Issue #3

Closing out our first week with two more finds: a bite-sized dice-driven school romance, and a moodier, “cozy but quietly sad” mermaid tragedy in the same emotional register as Issue #1’s Undersea Clinic. Both still uncovered in English as of this issue.

目次

🎲 Pick 1: Dice Love (さいころの恋)

What it is: A short (20–30 minute) after-school romance visual novel where the dialogue and the ending you get are decided, in part, by an actual dice roll built into the game. Coins earned from finishing a playthrough can be spent on items that nudge future rolls in your favor, which turns replaying for the other three endings into its own small meta-game.

Why it’s worth watching: Randomizing part of the narrative delivery is a small, clever twist on the standard choice-based visual novel formula, and it’s executed by a solo or small team with real craft — four distinct endings, a full support-item economy, streamer-friendly by the developer’s own request. Rated for all ages, and as of this week it has zero coverage in English anywhere we can find.

Where to find it: Free, Windows download, via freem!. Japanese only; the dice mechanic and branching are easy to follow even with limited reading ability.

🧜 Pick 2: Mermaid Island (人魔島)

What it is: A free browser/Windows/mobile visual novel about a young man who grew up fascinated by the Little Mermaid story and travels to a remote chain of islands, where he meets a girl who seems to have stepped directly out of the legend. What starts as a fairy-tale romance turns into something with real teeth: forbidden rules, a secret the island is keeping, and a choice about whether staying together is worth what it costs.

Why it’s worth watching: This is the same “tender but quietly devastating” register that made Issue #1’s Undersea Clinic resonate — Japanese narrative games keep finding fresh angles on bittersweet romance, and a mermaid myth retold as a love-versus-taboo story is a strong one. About an hour long, five-star rated on its small home platform, and currently invisible to English-speaking audiences.

Where to find it: Free, browser-based or Windows download, via novelgame.jp. Japanese only.

A note on how this newsletter is made

As with every issue: our own summaries and impressions, not translated marketing copy, with credit and a link back to the original developer and platform every time. Developers who’d rather not be featured, or who want to flag a correction, can just reply to this email.

That’s the first three issues of Unlocalized. Thanks for reading — more undiscovered Japanese indie and doujin games next week.
