Every few years, a small Japanese-made game slips past the language barrier and becomes a cult hit in the West. Unlocalized exists to catch that moment earlier — before the English-language press, before the subtitled Let’s Plays, while the only coverage is still a Japanese blog post and a handful of tweets.
What we do
Each issue, we dig through Japanese doujin circles, DLsite new releases, freeware archives (unityroom, freem, novelgame.jp), and developer accounts on X to find games that are already turning heads in Japan but haven’t been written about in English yet. We play or research each one ourselves and write our own take — not a translated store page, not AI-mangled marketing copy.
How we handle sourcing
We credit and link back to the original developer and to the Japanese coverage that led us there, every time. We don’t reproduce developers’ text, art, or screenshots wholesale. If we ever quote a developer directly, it’s a short, attributed line, the same as any games-press outlet would do.
Get in touch
If you’re a developer and don’t want your game featured, or want to correct something we got wrong, or if you know a game we should be covering — reply to any issue or reach out on X.
Unlocalized is a new, independent project. This page is a work in progress.
