Issue #2
Two more picks this week, both still sitting at zero English-language coverage as of this issue — one a tiny, mechanically inventive romance built around a literal roll of the dice, the other a gentle solo-dev adventure about opening a notebook and following where it leads.
♫ Pick 1: Renoir Coffee — BOOK&RECORD (ルノワールコーヒー -BOOK&RECORD-)
![]()
What it is: A very short (10–15 minute) browser romance game with a mechanic we haven’t seen anywhere else: instead of clicking through dialogue, you follow Japanese subtitles and tap the English words woven into them, in order, while a custom-commissioned score plays underneath. The story is about reconnecting with someone through the memory of a specific coffee shop — ordinary moments that turn out to be threaded together by one person you keep almost-forgetting and then don’t.
Why it’s worth watching: Word-timing as the core interaction is a neat, tiny piece of game design — it turns “reading a visual novel” into something closer to karaoke, and it means the game plays completely differently with sound on. It’s rated 4.7/5 from players on its home platform and currently has no write-ups anywhere outside Japan. Play with headphones.
Where to find it: Free, browser-based or Windows download, via novelgame.jp. Japanese only, but the core mechanic (tap the highlighted word as it’s read) needs almost no language ability to enjoy.

📖 Pick 2: Kotori’s Pocket Adventure (コトリちゃんのポケット冒階記)
![]()
What it is: A small, quiet solo-dev browser adventure: you open a little notebook and follow a gentle quest that continues from wherever you left off. No combat, no fail states as far as we’ve found — just a soft, exploratory pace that feels closer to reading a pocket storybook than playing a conventional adventure game.
Why it’s worth watching: There’s a real appetite in the West for exactly this register of Japanese game — small, handmade, unhurried, closer to a picture book than a “game” in the mechanical sense (see the audience for things like A Short Hike or Wide Ocean Big Jacket). This one is brand new, from a single credited creator, and as of this week has no coverage anywhere in English.
Where to find it: Free, browser-based, via freem!. Japanese text, light and simple enough that machine translation or a dictionary app should get you through it comfortably.

A note on how this newsletter is made
Same as always: the descriptions above are our own impressions after playing or closely researching each game, not translated marketing copy, and we link back to the original developer and platform every time. If you’re a developer and would rather not be featured, or want to correct something, just reply to this email.
Issue #2 of Unlocalized. Issue #3 lands tomorrow.
